St Vrain Mountain - February 25, 2007

Andy (Gerber), Charles, Fabio and I did a hike up in the IPW with the intention of climbing St Vrain Mountain. The winds were brutal at the Meadow - St Vrain saddle so we turned around there. Andy and I brought skis and skied out... what a great way to travel, we beat Charles and Fabio out by 42 minutes!

Longs Peak Winter Ascent via The Trough - March 17-18, 2007

Charles, Peter, Mike, Marella, Fabio, Eric, Brian, and I set out to climb Longs Peak via the Trough (with a high camp at Black Lake) over the weekend of March 17-18, 2007. Conditions were stellar and Charles, Brian, Eric, Fabio, and I summited about 10am Sunday under sunny skies and windy conditions. A winter ascent of Longs has eluded me for a long, long time, so it was nice to finally put that behind me.

Mayflower Hill - March 11, 2007

Mike, Marella, Chris Fisher, Eric Lee, Peter S, and I attempted to climb Pacific and Atlantic (and probably Crystal) today. We reached Mayflower Hill and Susan called to tell me Michael was in the hospital with a possible bowel obstruction (life threatening condition requring emergency surgery)... so we all quickly turned back and headed down.

Thankfully, Michael's condition was just a serious viral stomach bug and 6 hours of IV fluids got him back on track. It was a beautiful day to be out, even for a short time...and I look forward to returning to these mountains soon.

Grand Canyon R2R2R - May 12, 2007

A ton of us headed out to run a R2R2R or a Rim-to-River-to-Rim the weekend of May 11-13. A total of 12 people wound up going. R2R2R: Me, Charles Danforth, Eric Lee, Chris Fisher, Michael Hodges, Kari Fraser, and Joy Robertson. On the Rim-to-River and back side: Andy Leach and his dad Jim, Amy Danforth, Sarah Mercer and Seth, and Todd Croke. The conditions were brutal, with temps hitting 113 degrees, so times were slow and there was much suffering. In the end, we were a great group that made it through the tough conditions. Next time... November when temps are lower!

Mike, Marella, Charles, and I climbed Dreamweaver on Mount Meeker on May 27. Conditions were perfect and the route is incredible!

James Peak - June 08, 2007

Wayne, Yancy, and I climbed the standard East Ridge route on James Peak on Friday, June 08, 2007. Snow conditions were great and I skied off the summit. About 2/3 of the route was skiable.

Mount Antero - June 24, 2007

Mike, Marella, Roger (Marella's dad), Eric, and I climbed Antero on Sunday, June 24, 2007. We took the standard Baldwin Gulch route. Eric and I had to park down near the road because the Baldwin Gulch road is way too rough and steep for a Subaru to negotiate. It was a beautiful day with great company, but the route sucks... miles and miles of loose rocky Jeep road.

I forgot my camera, so all photos are my Marella.

Longs Peak Grand Slam Attempt - July 8, 2007

On Sunday July 8, 2007, Peter, Mike, Marella, and I attempted the Radical Slam in RMNP. This involves summiting Mount Meeker, Longs Peak, Pagoda Mountain, Storm Peak, Mount Lady Washington, Battle Mountain, and Estes Cone all in one day (about 20 miles and 8500' of gain). We made it almost to the top of Storm Peak when (ironically) a storm caused us to abort early. Still a fun day out in the mountains with friends though!

Maroon Bells Four Pass Loop - July 28, 2007

A bunch of BTR runners and friends (11 total) met in Aspen to run the Four Pass Loop on Saturday, July 28, 2007. This is a super scenic 28 mile loop that circles the Maroon Bells. There is almost 9000' of climbing as the trail climbs over four major passes: West Maroon Pass, Frigid Air Pass, Trailrider Pass, Buckskin Pass. It was an INCREDIBLE run with a really awesome group of people!

Mount Huron - August 12, 2007

Eric, Tressa, Peter, and I drove over to Leadville to join Todd, Yasuyo, Charles, and Amy for a mellow camping trip and climb of Mount Huron. We didn't find Todd and Yasuyo until we got to the summit of Huron, but the rest of us had a great time camping near Winfield. The climb was at a VERY mellow pace since we were all tapering for various events (Pikes Peak Ascent/Marathon/double or Leadville 100). I forgot how much fun it can be to just to a nice "hike" instead of a death march!

Radical Slam - September 09, 2007

On Sunday, September 9, 2007 Alan Smith, Eric Lee, and I attempted the Radical Slam. This was my 3rd or 4th attempt at the Grand/Radical Slam. The Radical Slam is climbing Mount Meeker, Longs Peak, Pagoda Mountain, Storm Peak, Mount Lady Washington, Battle Mountain, and Estes Cone in one day. You must finish off the climb by completing 50 push-ups in the parking lot. I finished in 13hr22min. Eric and Alan were a minute or two ahead of me on the run back in from Estes Cone. Total distance is about 19 miles and elevation gain is about 9000' vertical feet. Almost the entire day is spent well above treeline to climb these 7 mountains.

South Boulder Creek/Bobolink Trail Run - October 17, 2007

I decided to get in a quick recovery run to help loosen up my back (lifting injury) and my legs (sore from the Denver Marathon last Sunday), so I headed down to the Bobolink trail for a run on my lunch hour. Since it was a recovery paced event, I brought the camera to capture some of the nice fall color.

Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim (R2R2R) 50 mile run - November 3, 2007

A group of Special Idiots headed back to the Grand Canyon for yet another 50 mile double crossing on November 3, 2007. Commonly referred to as a rim-to-rim-to-rim or R2R2R in the ultrarunning circles, it's a super classic one day run that covers 42-48 miles, depending on route taken. We took the 46 mile route and added another 4 miles on the south rim, to make it an even 50 miler. There is over 11,000' of elevation gain on this run and it's an extremely serious undertaking... especially in the hotter summer months (it's suicide in the summer).

For this trip, we had 9 Special Idiots: myself, Ben Smith, Jonas Fast, Kari Fraser, and Fritjof Fagerlund in one car. The Estes Park crew of Michael Hodges, Alan Smith, and Michal Poland joined us at the south rim. Michael P couldn't run due to injury. Alan and Michael H started a while after us and unfortunately, we only saw them briefly near the North Rim.

Night Run - December 1, 2007

A big group of us did a nice long night run on Saturday, December 1, 2007. We wound up running 16.2 miles with 2600' of elevation gain. Temps were cold, but we had a great time! Present were: Peter S, Kari F, Chris G, Steph E, Eric Lee, Stephanie, Shane, Sam, Chip Tilden (visiting from NYC), and Ben S. We finished up as the snow started falling and had a great dinner of ribs and beer. Kristen Alvarez was able to meet up with us for the dinner.

Nederland to Boulder Trail Run - December 22, 2007

Early in the week, I hatched a plan to run from Boulder to Nederland, via as much trail as possible. I found a great route that would take us there on 95% trail over 32 miles and 9000' of gain. Someone had the brilliant idea to switch the direction to keep the gain at a respectable 5800', so we did that. On Saturday, Charles Danforth, Stephanie Ehret, Chris Fisher, Kari Fraser, Kurt, and myself jumped on the 7:10am bus headed for Nederland. When we arrived at the high school at 8am, we were greeted with single digit temps, wind chills around -30F, about 6-12" of new snow (on a substantial base), and winds gusting to about 50mph. Due to the conditions, we altered the upper part of the run to use primarily plowed dirt roads, as the trails would be knee to hip deep snow. After a wonderful aid station break at Peter Bakwin's parent's cabin at the 2 hour mark, we continued on and switched over to trails at Walker Ranch. Due to the late hour and toll the run took on us, Kari and I bailed at Eldo and finished with about 25 miles, while Steph and Kurt closed the loop back to downtown Boulder, for about 30 miles.
