The Matron - January 14, 2006

matron-113.jpg

Fabio, Peter, Kristin, Mason, and I climbed the Matron on Saturday. We originally intended to climb 'The North Face' 5.6, but it proved to be a very sketchy lead (the first pitch). After flailing around on it for several hours, we went down and climbed the East Ridge 5.5. For a 5.5, it was very hard, and scared me quite a bit. The photos are a combination of mine, Fabio's, and Kristin's, with credit given for theirs.

Longs Peak - February 24-25, 2006

DSC_5769.jpg

George, Bill, Charles, and I attempted to climb the Trough on Long's this weekend. Weather and conditions were great, but we got a late start and were moving a little too slow. We wound up turning back around 13,300' since it was getting late in the day. Still a really nice climb with great people.

Mount Bancroft - Direct East Ridge - April 23, 2006

DSC_6235.jpg

Charles, Andy, Mike, Marella and I climbed the Direct East Ridge (Grade II, 5.2) of Mount Bancroft today. Bancroft sits in the southern part of the Indian Peaks. The East Ridge is an airy exposed technical climb consisting of a rappell into a notch, a short bit of 5.2ish (about 40') rock and a lot of knife edge snow and Class 3/4 scrambling. All in all, it was a great day, and nice to finally be able to climb with Andy.

South Arapahoe Peak - Skywalker Couloir - June 20, 2006

sky-1367.jpg

Mike, Marell, Charles, and I took advantage of a Tuesday and avoided the crowds on the Skywalker Couloir. We left Boulder at 3:30am, hit the trail around 5am, and started the couloir about 6:30am. The snow in the lower 3/4 was rock hard snow (and somewhat difficult for me due to some issues I was having with my crampons), but the sun was able to warm the Princess Leia finish to provide absolutely perfect conditions for the very steep (65 degree) snow at the top. This was definatley my favorite snow climb to date... awesome climb!

Indian Peaks Trail Run - Betty Lake/Skyscraper Lake Loop - June 24, 2006

DSCN4618.jpg

Don, Yasuyo, and I did an awesome trail run today. We started at the Hessie TH and ran up the King Lake Trail to Bob and Betty Lakes, just below the Continental Divide. We crossed over a minor pass and dropped down to Skyscraper lake and ran out the Woodland Lake drainage. It was about 13 miles, 2740' of elevation gain, and took us about 4 hours including stops (3hrs running, 1hr of breaks).

Mount Meeker - Longs Peak - Storm Peak - June 27, 2006

DSC_7056.jpg

I had the day off, so intended to get up really early and try the Grand Slam. Unfortunately I wound up sleeping in and arrived at the Longs Peak TH at 6:00am (about 4 hours late). I wound up climbing Meeker (13,911') via the Loft, traversed over and climbed Longs Peak (14,256') via Clark's Arrow, and descended the Keyhole route tagging Storm Peak (13,326') on the way down. Car to car time was 9 hours 2 minutes.

Mount Audubon and Pauite Peak Trail Run - July 01, 2006

DSCN4661.jpg

Charles, Peter, and I ran Mount Audubon today, in preparation for the upcoming Pikes Peak Marathon. We felt great and summited in 1hr 23min (Peter was about 5 minutes faster, and Chales about 3 min faster). We then scrambled over to Pauite via the East Ridge, reaching the summit in a little under an hour, then scrambled and glissaded down to Blue Lake and ran out. Distance was about 10 miles, with 3115' of elevation gain, and the total time was 4hr 28min car to car.

Ice Lakes Basin Hike - July 15, 2006

ice-basin-1030.jpg

Peter and I did a nice hike into the Ice Lakes Basin. We were stormed out at the first basin, so didn't make it to upper Ice Lake. The wildflowers here are AMAZING!

Ruby Range Traverse - West Elks Wilderness - July 12, 2006

ruby-1520.jpg

After volunteering at the Hardrock 100 Endurance Run, Peter and I stopped off in Crested Butte on the way home and did a "run" of the Ruby Range. We climbed Ruby Mountain, Mount Owen, Purple Peak, and Mount Afley. It was about 3800' of elevation gain and 8 miles. It took 5hr 28min car to car, including a lot of leisure time on the summits.

Tenmile Traverse - July 29, 2006

tenmile-1150.jpg

On Saturday, July 29, 2006 Mike, Marella, Charles, Nathan, and I set out with the very ambitious goal of traversing the Tenmile Range from Mount Royal to Peak 10, in one day. This would be 12 summits, 16.5 miles, and about 8000' of elevation gain. We set out at 4am and finished the entire traverse 15 hours later. All in all, it was a great but exhausting day out in the mountains!

Indian Peaks Uberrun - August 06, 2006

IMG_0405.jpg

Peter, Charles, and I did a big run in the Indian Peaks on Sunday, Aug 6. We started at Moffat Tunnel and climbed to Heart Lake and then to Roger's Pass. From there we ran down the divide to Rollins Pass and caught the old railroad grade back to Forest Lakes. From Forest Lakes, we returned via trail to the East Portal. Total distance was about 19 miles. All photos courtesy of Charles Danforth... I brought my camera, but no batteries.

Mount Sherman - September 15, 2006

DSC_8468.jpg

Had the day off so I did a quick trip up Sherman. Weather was pretty crappy up high, blowing snow about 60mph. Got up in an hour, down in 45 minutes. Sherman wasn't a very memorable climb, that's for sure... pretty boring one.

Grand Canyon - Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim Run - November 25, 2006

R2R2R-21000.jpg

Over Thanksgiving weekend, Todd, Yasuyo, Peter, and I headed down to Grand Canyon National Park to do a bit of trailrunning. Originally, Todd and Yasuyo planned to run from the South Rim to the river (Phantom Ranch) and back (18 miles) and Peter and I were going to run from the South Rim to Cottonwood campground and back (34 miles). Todd and Yasuyo wound up going all the way to Cottonwood and Peter and I did the full R2R2R (46 miles). When we topped out at 9pm, the radios didn't work (to call Todd for a pickup) so we wound up walking another 3 or so miles to the campgound! Not a bad day for our first 50 mile run! It took us about 17 hours and had 11,400' of elevation gain... by far the hardest day I've ever had.
